The lion and the mouse
A lion was asleep in his den one day when a playful little mouse ran up his outstretched paw and across his nose awakening him from his nap. As quick as lightening the lion clapped his mighty paw upon the frightened little mouse and roared angrily.
"Please don't kill me, "squealed the mouse. "Forgive me this time and I will never forget it. One day I may be able to do you a good turn to repay your kindness."
The lion smiled at the mouse, amused by the thought that such a tiny creature could ever be able to help him. So he lifted his paw and let the mouse go.
Later, while the lion was out hunting, he become caught in a net which some men had set to catch him. At once he let out a roar that echoed through the forest. The little mouse heard it, and recognizing the voice of the lion who had spared his life, ran to where the king of bests lay tangled in the net of ropes.
"Well, your majesty," said the mouse, "I know you did not believe me when I said that a day may come when I may repay your kindness, but here is my chance."
At once the little mouse started to nibble through the ropes that bound the lion with his sharp little teeth. Soon the lion was free and able to crawl out to the hunters' snare.
This fable teachers us that no act of kindness, however small, is ever wasted.
